My Blue Heaven by Gene Austin

For my first listening blog, I chose "My Blue Heaven" by Gene Austin. One of the most notable features of the melody being is the uplifting notes of the piano. It fits with the theme of the song. The lyrics and melody of the song create a peaceful imagery of this safe haven that is a home. Nothing in the melody really stood out to me, until  I got towards the end of the song. There is little under a minute left, and then there's suddenly a new instrument being played, in my mind, this new instrument almost sounds like bird calls. It plays in an interlude before the Gene Austin starts to sing again. Then the song ends.

With further analysis, I realized the song also fits into a few of the main themes. One of which being listening. There is a hook that repeats and then there are also lyrics (the chorus) that frequently repeats. Furthermore, I think that it even shows Music and Identity. It centers around family and a home. Both of which are idolized in this time period. Way back then, it was the normal and even expected of people to get married, have kids, and have this perfect white picket fence life. And part of Music and Identity is family, culture, and society. The song portrays the standard white family, culture, and society of this time period.
